Downtown Myrtle Beach Oceanfront Seafood Eatery – Pier 14

Myrtle Beach is well known for golf and great food.  For sweeping scenic views of the Atlantic, while you’re eating, it doesn’t get much better than Pier 14.  Open for lunch and dinner, this oceanfront eatery offers a tasty dining experience.  As soon as you arrive, you’ll notice this striking 300-foot fishing pier and restaurant.  Once you enter the restaurant you’ll notice the warm contemporary nautical themed décor, tantalizing aromas, and a friendly vibrant atmosphere filled with both tourists and locals.  I was awestruck by the enormous pier as I discovered this restaurant while walking on the beach waiting for my friends to arrive from the airport.

Location:  1306 North Ocean Blvd., Myrtle Beach, [amazon_textlink asin=’1101878061′ text=’South Carolina’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’theyums-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’f55c34bb-a850-11e7-8f3b-21f638d00446′]

Menu:  This is as beachy as dining gets in [amazon_textlink asin=’B0073LH40I’ text=’Myrtle Beach’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’theyums-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’0c286330-a851-11e7-8c6e-8f092e0827ff’], but with a touch of class.  The seafood was beautifully presented and portions were more than generous.  My lunch favorites were the beer battered fish sandwich served with homemade coleslaw, and fries; also the shrimp platter with sides of miso butter and harissa sauce.  Once my friends arrived we indulged in the crab legs which were succulent and piled high.

The dinner menu is more expansive offering more variety; including prime rib pot-roast soup and the chicken crustacean.  The chicken crustacean consists of shrimp, scallops, and fresh crab meat served on top of beer-battered fried chicken breast with creamy alfredo sauce and mashed potatoes.  Talk about serious comfort food. I enjoyed every bite of the generous portions and since I was on vacation, decided to worry about the calories later.

Thoughts:  Pier 14 is a Myrtle Beach icon and has been owned by the Devereux family for thirty years.  This location had a pier, but no restaurant since 1926, and has gone through a number of changes throughout the years.  Pier 14 originally opened as a nightclub and late dinner venue in 1984, however business did not take off as expected.  Bryan Devereux, the current owner, closed Pier 14 in 1984 and reopened later that year after changing the concept of food and beverage.

After Pier 14 was rebuilt, it was approved by the Corps of Engineers and given a 25-year lifespan until [amazon_textlink asin=’B000VLCS7Q’ text=’Hurricane Hugo’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’theyums-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’5175a10b-a851-11e7-81b0-f5418e6fe547′] arrived in September 1989.  Although the storm was treacherous and caused serious damage in the Myrtle Beach area due to the catastrophic storm surges, Pier 14 refused to buckle.

The restaurant portion remained and although there was substantial damage to the front ramp leading to the restaurant and pier, it was one of the few piers to survive Hugo’s powerful force.  Pier 14 closed for 5 months after Hugo and in 1991, new renovations were added which includes a new fishing pier, bait and tackle shop, and outside deck.

Although there are other restaurants with ocean views, there won’t be a way to top the experience of pier-dining unless someone builds a structure in the actual surf (which would be illegal). During the warm summer months, the outdoor seating area is open and guests can stroll on the pier checking out what the fishermen are catching.

Anglers can walk out over the top of the ocean to cast their rods and reels and get close to where the big ones love to swim.  I spoke to the manager and he mentioned that there are various species of fish regularly caught from Pier 14, including sea bass and Spanish mackerel.  Overall, Pier 14 is a great place to kick back and unwind at any time of the day with friendly fast service. The location offers a relaxed classic ambiance and charm.   The pier is open until 8 pm, along with the bait and tackle shop that can accommodate all of your fishing needs, including rod and reel rental, live and artificial baits.

Price Range:  $10-$26

Additional notes:  I highly recommend visiting this restaurant during your stay on the strip; however, during the summer allow additional time to arrive due to summer beach traffic.  Parking can be a challenge and it is not close by.  You will also need to be physically able to walk up a ramp.
