At Bamiyan Kabob Afghan Cuisine in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, there is rarely a table available. They are THAT busy, and the food is THAT good. This jam-packed restaurant is bustling on the weekend when families (immediate and extended) flock here for their grilled meat and rice dishes. Everything at Bamiyan Kabob is freshly made by hand daily and reminds them of home.
Location: 5120 Dixie Road, Mississauga, Ontario
Menu: The menu at Bamiyan Kabob features Afghani grilled favorites such as Kofta (ground meat), Salmon, Chicken, Choppan (Lamb) and Beef all flavored with more than 40 herbs and spices. The dishes are a mixture of hot and spicy as well as mild but flavourful delights that will fill your stomach and warm your soul. Vegetarians are a bit limited for choices with only a vegetarian wrap, the very spicy potato based Boulagnee, and various salads and rice as selections.
Thoughts: The ambiance isn’t fabulous as the restaurant has a fast-food atmosphere to it but don’t let that deter you from giving Bamiyan Kabob a chance. Don’t be surprised to see large groups of families sitting together (and apart) as tables and chairs are few compared to the number of people waiting in line to order. Sharing a table is to be expected if you are a party of two.
Best option if you plan on eating in versus getting take-out is to have one person in your party stalk the room for an available table/seat while the other person stands in the long line at the counter to order.
Once you’ve ordered – wait for your number to be called, retrieve your tray and get ready to eat. Once done, clear your table. Bamiyan Kabob isn’t the type of restaurant where you lounge with friends over conversation and drinks. That’s not to say that you’ll be asked to leave – but with all the people waiting around for a table you’re sure to get the message quick.
Portion sizes are massive as each dinner entrée includes Afghani-style naan — oval-shaped bread with a hard, crisp exterior but soft interior studded with sesame seeds; green salad; a tomato/onion salsa-like salad, and seasoned basmati rice. All dishes come with a spicy hot chutney and a cooling yogurt garlic mint dip.
A few favorites to try:
- Choppan Kabob Dinner ($13.99 CAN) – These marinated and grilled lamb chops are a personal favorite. The meat is always seasoned and grilled to perfection; my only regret is that they only give you 3-4 chops which leave me always yearning for more.
- Kofta Kabob Dinner ($9.99 CAN) – Lean ground beef is marinated in fresh spices and seasonings, skewered and grilled. If you’ve never had kofta before think of it as super flavourful meatloaf on a stick – simply delicious and with a little kick of heat!
- Barg Kabob Dinner ($12.59 CAN) – Chunks of filet mignon marinated and grilled. So tender, flavorful and delicious.
- Chicken Breast Kabob Dinner ($11.50 CAN) – Never dry, always moist, and succulent.
- Mango Smoothie ($3.00 CAN) – Similar to an Indian lassi made with yogurt, mango, and spices. It’s refreshing and complements your meal.
- Firnee ($2.25 CAN) – This creamy custard dessert is a homemade pudding spiced with cardamom and topped with pistachios. A perfect ending to your meal and large enough to share for two.
Price: Dinners come complete with salad, rice, and naan – $9.99 to 14.49 CAN. Kabobs with salad, and naan – $7.99 to 12.99 CAN. Wraps – $4.29 to 7.99 CAN.
Additional Notes: There are five other locations within the Greater Toronto Area. As previously mentioned, Bamiyan Kabob is very busy and a popular dinner out for families, arrive early and prepare to wait for a free table and your order. I recommend that you avoid the restaurant during any Middle Eastern holidays such as Eid al-Adha as it will be even more difficult to get a table/seat as families dine here to break their fast.
A no-nonsense eatery, Bamiyan Kabob Afghan Cuisine is very much a help yourself and clean up after yourself establishment but trust me — it’s worth the long waits and the extra effort for fabulous tasting traditional [amazon_textlink asin=’1566563275′ text=’middle eastern cuisine’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’theyums-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’1041f6cc-cf24-11e7-aa99-bd71959ca7f8′].
