Located two blocks from the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington D.C., Bolt Burgers was a welcome surprise from the cheap fast food joints and chain burger joints that promise great taste but at high prices.
Location: 1010 Massachusetts Ave NW, Washington, D.C.
Menu: Create your own custom Bolt Burger (prices start at $6.95) starts with your choice of meat: Prime Angus Beef, Ground Turkey, Marinated Chicken Breast, or Veggie Black Bean.
Add one of the custom spice blends: peppercorn herb; hot chili, [easyazon_link identifier=”B003T07T7U” locale=”US” tag=”theyum-20″]cumin[/easyazon_link], [easyazon_link identifier=”B00269YPB8″ locale=”US” tag=”theyum-20″]paprika[/easyazon_link], [easyazon_link identifier=”B0081TLEWA” locale=”US” tag=”theyum-20″]yellow curry[/easyazon_link], [easyazon_link identifier=”B000WR4LMY” locale=”US” tag=”theyum-20″]turmeric[/easyazon_link]. Bottles of each spice blend are also on the table should you wish to add your own later and skip this step.
Add a sauce on the side: “Killer Ketchup”, Tomato & sweet basil, Sweet & Tangy BBQ, and Habanero Cilantro Lime Mayo.
Add from the garden: Leaf lettuce, tomato, red onion, and pickles.
Add an extra topping at $1.00 each: [easyazon_link identifier=”B00028LFUY” locale=”US” tag=”theyum-20″]Applewood smoked bacon[/easyazon_link], seven different kinds of cheese, six additional toppings such as jalapeno, mushrooms, fried egg, or [easyazon_link identifier=”B000WM1DI4″ locale=”US” tag=”theyum-20″]black bean corn salsa[/easyazon_link].
Thoughts: The best thing about the burger is the caramelized crunchy edge of the meat patty. Created by cooking the burger on the flat top grill, this added real flavor to the meat and sealed in the sweet juices of the beef. Other big pluses are the large piece of fresh lettuce (no shredded lettuce here), the “killer ketchup” which added punch and heat, and the freshly baked brioche bun.
I added the Applewood smoked bacon and it was well worth the $1. Crisp, smokey bacon on a burger just brings another layer of flavor and besides, bacon makes everything better!
The burger as a whole is very filling and great value for the money. Take note, the meat patty is bigger than the bun – not the other way around!
The thick cut onion rings ($6.95) were crisp and not greasy. We opted for the “share it” size – perfectly sized for three people, too much in my opinion for two. You can also customize your onion rings and french fries by adding one of the spice blends.
Also on the menu are 12 predesigned burgers ranging in price from $7.95 to $9.95 if you don’t want to create your own.
A kid’s menu is also available as well as wine, beer, smoothies and milkshakes (both regular and alcoholic).
Another fun element for the kids or kids at heart is the beverage station. One single drink dispenser with all the usual soda products but with the ability to customize your drink with fruit flavors or create any blend imaginable.
One last comment, about our visit at Bolt Burgers, is the service. Our server Derrick was a breath of fresh air – friendly, welcoming, and happy to assist with menu selections – he added to our whole dining experience and went the extra mile making this not your ordinary fast food joint.
If you are looking for a meaty, juicy, real big bite burger experience with exceptional taste, excellent service, and great value, then you have to check out Bolt Burgers in Washington DC.
