The light, bright décor of Anna’s House welcomes you in, and the homey American comfort food invites you to stay.
Location: Anna’s House, located at 12450 Felch Street in Holland, Michigan. Anna’s House has eight locations throughout Michigan. Find the restaurant’s website here.
During this time of social distancing and isolation, we still have to eat. And we still want to patronize local restaurants that we love, helping to keep them in business. We urge you to check the websites of the restaurants we’ve reviewed and to consider eating local as a way to help our communities. Dining restrictions and house of service change frequently.
Menu: Anna’s House only serves breakfast and lunch. The menu features classic American dishes with a modern twist. Anna’s House works with local food producers and prefers to use all-natural meat, and only organic eggs.
The menu indicates dairy and gluten-free options, locally sourced ingredients, and all-natural meat. Symbols next to menu items indicate if a dish is vegetarian.
The chef dedicates an entire menu to vegan fare, with about 20 dishes on the list. Some interesting vegan choices include the vegan breakfast tinga tostadas. These vegan tostadas star jackfruit simmered in chipotle with adobo sauce served on house-made corn tostadas. Fresh avocado, black beans, and diced radish accent the dish. Then they drizzle it with a cilantro-lime vinaigrette. Vegan scrambled eggs accompany the tostadas.
A separate kitchen prepares meals specifically for those with food allergies.
Thoughts: The atmosphere is bright and airy with a nod to retro 1950’s diner décor yet updated for the new century. The environment feels fresh and clean, with lots of retro teal blue and white in modern shades.
A 1950’s console TV greets you as you enter the lobby. A living room lamp accents the top of the television. Cosmos start-burst light fixtures illuminate the space. While teapots and toasters adorn the open-shelved room dividers, Anna’s House maintains an open floor plan—framed toasters from the last century to provide a fun conversation starter.
I enjoyed the fact that there is lots to capture my attention, while the space remains fresh.
As a chocolate lover, sometimes I even need chocolate for breakfast, after all, chocolate does contain caffeine, so it makes a significant boost to my early morning coffee. The chocolate quinoa breakfast bowl is the restaurant’s answer to that morning chocolate craving. Fresh strawberries, blueberries, and bananas, along with some toasted coconut color-block the top of the bowl. Mixed into the warm chocolaty quinoa, you’ll find locally-sourced maple syrup, pecans, and walnuts. Then it’s spiced with cinnamon. The dish tastes noticeably chocolate without being too sweet. A dark chocolate drizzle finishes the top. Select two percent, soy, or a side of steamed almond milk. They present the milk in a silver pitcher, to pour just the right amount over the quinoa bowl, so that it’s still warm when you’re ready to eat.
Another favorite was Anna’s skillet. It starts with a base of diced ham and fried red-skinned potatoes. Then they mix in sautéed green peppers, onions, mushrooms, and tomatoes. Gooey melted Cheddar cheese creates a dish with homey comfort. Then they garnish it with chopped green onion for a pop of color and added flavor. The plate comes with two organic cage-free eggs cooked to your liking. Toast from locally-made bread finishes the meal.
Note that Anna’s House doesn’t take reservations on weekends. The Holland location has plenty of free parking.
Price Range: The breakfast classics and combos range from $8 for two eggs and potatoes to $16.50 when steak accompanies the meal. Omelets start at $11 for one with Greek flavors to $13 for a Western omelet. Burgers for lunch start at $12.25 while other lunch entrees like salad begin at $10 for a chicken salad and go up to $12.25 for Anna’s gourmet nut and berry salad with a grilled chicken breast.
